Our Courses

We are pleased to enclose details of Schoolsafe training arranged for the forthcoming academic year. Due to increasing demand and in order to make training more easily accessible for schools in Suffolk, Schoolsafe has restructured its training programme as follows:

The training programme consists of 6 modules

Module 1
Legal Framework

This module gives information and the ability to identify:

  • Our legal rights and responsibilities, including reference to the Education and Inspections Act 2006
  • The context of reasonable force within an educational setting
    Duration 1 ½ hrs
    Number of delegates: Max 25, Minimum 8

Module 2
Theory of De-escalation

This module gives information and the ability to plan how to prevent and avoid dangerous incidents by:

  • Identifying underlying causes of behaviour
  • Planning to meet individual needs
  • Developing structures and procedures

Duration 1 ½ hrs
Number of delegates: Max 25 staff, minimum 8

Module 3
Risk Management
Delegates attending this course will be able to:

  • Identify the risk assessment process
  • Develop strategies to reduce the risk of harm to staff or pupils
  • Identify the components of a legal framework to support staff practice

Duration 2 hrs

Modules 1 & 2 are open to all staff and both modules must be attended to gain Schoolsafe accreditation. Modules 1, 2 and 3 must be attended in order to fulfil prerequisites for physical training. All staff should attend a Theory update (Module 6) every 3 years

Module 4
Practical Models of Behaviour
An optional course for those schools and staff who wish to explore in more depth models around the theory of behaviour:

  • To explore models of behaviour
  • To consider how they impact in a practical setting

Duration 1 ½ hrs
Number of delegates: Max 25, minimum 8

Module 5
Physical De-escalation
A Physical De-escalation course for all staff who are Schoolsafe accredited (or equivalent) and where the school has received Module 3 (or equivalent)

  • A one-day bespoke training programme for staff to gain physical de-escalation techniques.

Number of delegates: Maximum 16, minimum 10
This is an accredited programme and should be re-accredited every year.

Module 6
Theory Update
Having completed Modules 1 & 2 training, all accredited staff should attend a theory update every 3 years.
Learning objectives:

  • To revisit Modules 1 & 2 and briefly remind all participants of the key issues concerning challenging behaviour
  • To identify recent changes in legislation including rights and responsibilities
  • To discuss any problems that may have arisen since completion of the original course

Duration, up to 2 hours, to allow for feedback and discussion
Number of delegates: Max 25, minimum 8

If required, a separate Theory programme can be arranged for lunch time supervisors and or business support staff, which is tailored to meet the individual needs of each group of staff.
The courses will give the ability to proactively plan for difficult and dangerous behaviour, to identify legal rights and responsibilities and to use a risk assessment to implement safer proactive.

Lunchtime Supervisors (MDSA’s – Mid Day Supervisors)

Duration 2 hours (this can be delivered either prior to, or after the lunch break)
Number of delegates Maximum 15 minimum 8

Business Support (office based staff, caretakers, technicians etc)

Duration 3 hours may be delivered over 2 x 1 ½ hrs sessions
Number of delegates Max 25 Minimum 8

Generic Training Days
